Softball at the World Games
Softball has a lot in common with the baseball, but it is played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Its games move at a faster pace since the dimensions of the field are smaller.
Softball made its debut at the 1981 Santa Clara World Games. It was featured at other World Games competitions, including the 1985 London World Games, the 2009 Kaohsiung World Games, the 2013 Cali World Games, the 2022 Birmingham World Games, and the 2025 Chengdu World Games.
At the 2025 Chengdu World Games, there are softball tournaments for both men and women. A standard softball game takes place over seven innings. Each of the innings is divided into a top half. The away team bat and tries to score runs (attacks), while the home team takes over the field and tries to record three outs (defense). Then, there is a bottom half when the roles of the teams are reversed.
In each inning, you will have the attacking team sending a batter to home plate to try to hit the pitch from the pitcher (defense). As opposed to the rule of baseball, pitchers throw underhand from flat ground in Softball. After hitting the ball fairly into the field of play, the batter must move around four bases to score a run.
The goal of this sport is for a team to score more runs than the opposing team. All the scores for both teams are counted after seven innings in total. Extra innings are played if a game ends in a tie at the end of seven innings.
