Answer

The first Australian Olympic gold medal was won by distance runner Edwin Flack, competing at the first of the modern Games in Athens, 1896. He was Australia's only competitor. He won both the 800 meters and 1,500 meters events. Edwin also competed in another sport at these Games, playing doubles tennis and winning a bronze medal (as part of a mixed team). Although there were 5 teams competing, Edwin and his partner came third after losing their only match in the semi-final.
