1919 Copa América in Brazil
The 1919 Copa América was held in Brazil. It was the 3rd edition of the tournament, played 11–29 May, 1919.
Copa America 1919: Brazil versus ArgentinaThe four participating countries were: Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay (defending champions). After each team had played each other once, Brazil and Uruguay were tied for first place. In the playoff game, Brazil won 1–0 after two extra time periods. It was Brazil's first title.
Trivia
- At the time the tournament was named the South American Championship of Nations. It was not called the Copa América until after 1967.
- The play-off game lasted 150 minutes, because of the two extra time periods of 30-minutes each. It was the longest match in the tournament's history, and one of the longest in international football history.
- The tournament saw the first hat-trick in Copa America history, scored by Brazilian player Arthur Friedenreich in a match against Chile.
