As the golf sport has grown and become more professionalized, the PGA Championship's format has also changed over time.  Prior to switching to the stroke play format in 1958, which is still in use today, it was competed as a match play event from 1916 to 1957, requiring head-to-head skill and endurance.

The competition has taken place at some of the most famous golf courses in America, including Valhalla, Oak Hill, and Southern Hills. Its legacy is still growing, with more locations scheduled well into the 2030s.
