The FIBA Basketball World Cup brings together top basketball teams from countries belonging to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), which serves as the worldwide governing authority for the sport. This tournament represents FIBA's most important global championship.

FIBA Basketball World Cup currently comprises 213 member federations worldwide. The competition was held every four years since its inception, though it shifted its cycle from 2014 to 2019 to avoid conflicting with the FIFA World Cup

Since the 2019 edition, 32 teams qualify for the final tournament, expanded from the previous 24-team format used from 2006-2014. The United States and Yugoslavia (including its successor teams) have been the most successful nations, each winning five gold medals, followed by the Soviet Union with three titles. The tournament serves as a qualifying event for the Olympic Games and represents the highest level of international basketball competition outside of the Olympics.

The FIFA World Cup is very similar to FIBA.  Both international tournaments took place in the same year between 1970 and 2014.  However, FIBA switched to an odd-number year cycle to avoid clashing with the FIFA World Cup, hence its next edition would take place in 2019. There is also the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, which is held every four years. It is held in even-numbered years (alternating with the men's event) and in a different country.

Tournament Format

32 teams compete in a group stage followed by knockout rounds over approximately two weeks.

Qualification Process

Teams qualify through FIBA World Cup Qualifiers played over multiple windows spanning approximately 15 months before the tournament.

The Naismith Trophy

Named after basketball inventor James Naismith, first awarded in 1967.

History and Evolution

During the early years of the championship, teams from multiple continents participated, with the first FIBA World Championship held in Argentina in 1950. Argentina won the inaugural tournament, which featured ten teams including representatives from Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa.

The tournament used a round-robin format where Argentina finished with the best record to claim the gold medal. While various continental zones participated from early on, it was in 1967 when the qualification system was formally established, linking continental competitions to World Championship berths.

In 1970, the qualifications continued to be based on continental competitions and the Olympic tournament. In the 1980s, FIBA created the unified FIBA Americas Championship as the qualifying tournament for teams from North, Central, and South America, replacing the previous separate qualifying systems. The tournament gradually expanded over the decades, reaching 24 teams in 2006 and eventually 32 teams in 2019.

Yugoslavia and the USA have each won 5 gold medals in the 19 editions of FIBA World Cup. Winners receive the Naismith Trophy. It was first handed out in 1967.
