Understanding Basketball's Global Popularity
Basketball is a very popular sport played all around the world, though it is more popular in certain countries particularly the US where it was invented. Here we use online search traffic for the term 'basketball' to analyze which countries it is more popular. See also the lists of popular sports in many countries.
Basketball is most popular, based on online searches for that term, in the USA. By the large list below it is clear how well the sport of basketball has spread from where it was invented to around the world. The data reveals fascinating patterns about how basketball has been adopted globally, with particularly strong showings in unexpected regions including Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and parts of Africa.
Key Findings from the Data
Basketball popularity correlates strongly with several factors including historical ties to the United States, presence of professional leagues, and integration into school physical education programs. The Philippines' remarkably high ranking demonstrates how cultural adoption can rival even the sport's country of origin in terms of relative popularity.
Complete Basketball Popularity Rankings
The following table ranks 110 countries based on their regional popularity score for basketball-related searches. The USA receives the baseline score of 100, with all other countries measured relative to this benchmark.
*Regional Popularity Note: Regional Popularity is a relative term (proportional to the most popular term and related to the popularity of other terms in each region), and does not represent an actual number of searches.
Understanding the Rankings
The basketball popularity rankings reveal several interesting patterns. The United States' top position is expected given basketball's American origins and the global influence of the NBA. However, the Philippines' second-place ranking at 71 demonstrates basketball's extraordinary cultural significance there, where the sport is played at every level from professional leagues to neighborhood courts.
European nations show strong representation in the rankings, particularly Lithuania (23), which has produced numerous NBA players and maintains a passionate basketball culture. Other basketball strongholds like Greece, Slovenia, and Croatia also feature prominently, reflecting the sport's establishment as a major European team sport alongside football.
💡 Pro Tip: When interpreting these rankings, remember that regional popularity measures relative search interest within each country, not absolute search volumes. A country with a smaller population might rank higher than a larger nation if basketball represents a greater proportion of their sports searches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country is basketball most popular in?
Basketball is most popular in the United States, which scores 100 in regional popularity based on online search traffic. This makes sense as basketball was invented in the USA and the NBA is the world's premier professional basketball league. The sport maintains its highest cultural significance and participation rates in America.
Why is the Philippines ranked second in basketball popularity?
The Philippines ranks second with a score of 71 because basketball has become deeply embedded in Filipino culture since its introduction during American colonial rule. The sport is played everywhere from professional leagues to street courts throughout the country, and basketball hoops can be found in virtually every barangay (neighborhood). The Filipino passion for basketball is legendary in Asia.
What does regional popularity mean in these rankings?
Regional popularity is a relative measurement proportional to the most popular search term in each region. It compares how often people search for basketball relative to other search terms in their country, not the absolute number of searches. A score of 50 means basketball is searched half as frequently (relative to total search volume) as in the USA, not that there are half as many searches.
How was this basketball popularity data collected?
This data was derived from Google Insights for Search, collected over a four-year period from January 2007 to January 2011. It analyzed search patterns for the term "basketball" across different countries worldwide, providing a snapshot of relative interest in the sport during that timeframe.
Which European countries show the highest basketball popularity?
Lithuania ranks highest among European nations at position 8 with a score of 23, followed by Macedonia at position 9 with 22. Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia also show strong basketball interest in the top 30. These rankings reflect basketball's status as a major sport in Eastern and Southern Europe, where national teams and professional leagues attract significant followings.
Why do some major basketball nations rank lower than expected?
Countries like Spain (92), France (91), and China (109) rank lower than their basketball achievements might suggest because the ranking measures relative search interest compared to all other topics in each country. These nations have strong basketball programs but also have many other popular sports and topics competing for search attention, which lowers their basketball-specific scores.
Has basketball popularity changed since this data was collected?
While this data is from 2007-2011, basketball's global popularity has generally continued to grow, particularly in Asia and Europe. The NBA's expanded international presence, social media coverage, and the success of international players in professional leagues have likely increased interest in many countries. However, the relative rankings between countries have remained fairly stable, with the USA and Philippines maintaining their strong positions.

What that means? How is it done? Do you pretend basketball is more popular in Irak than in Lithuania, Serbia not in this top, France #91whereas UK is #36, Spain #92...is it really a study? it looks like random numbers! - Rob Admin Thomas Chahri (2015)
It's not random numbers, though not easy to comprehend. Google provides this data based on searches on this topic around the world. The numbers represent the popularity of basketball searches relative to searches for other terms in each country. - Thomas Chahri Rob (2016)
The results seems very far from the reality of basketball country. I think too that methodology is wrong. Iraq, Mongolia, Afghanistan on the top??? It would be better to look at number of people playing basketball, in how many people go to see games, see NBA on tv or in NBA league pass. Obviously you didn't rank with the right elements, you have non-basketball countries in the top 20, whereas countries in which basketball is one of the 5 major sports ranked 100 and more (Brazil-Italy-Russia-China).How many people did attend the Brazil Basketball Div 1? And how many in Mongolia? In Botswana same popularity than in Croatia? Something goes very wrong. For me you looked for terms not used in each language, it provides a fully non-sense - Del (2014)
