Timing in Sports

Timing is the ability to coincide movements in relation to external factors. It is a combination of decision-making, co-ordination and reaction time which gets the player in the right place at the right time. It is a common perception that sports people with good timing always seem unhurried and have extra time to make decisions.

One way to improve timing is to perform repetitive drills, as athletes with more experience tend to have better timing. Being able to anticipate events by ‘reading the game’ often gained through experience allows the player to demonstrate good timing because they get into the correct position early. An athlete with better timing will be able to perform at a quicker rate.

There are no tests available for timing, though some training drills can give an indication of a players ability in this area.
