Taparoo - a new sport

Taparoo is a new sport created by Rowan Connell from Melburne, Australia. He invented this sport in 2009 when starting his PE teaching career. It was trialled at Berwick Secondary College. Esssentially, taparoo involves tapping the ball with your hand to get it into a soccer goal.

Equipment Required: A soft touch volleyball, soccer goals, ideally an indoor court with walls or nets around the outside but can be played outdoors.

Teams can consist of between 5 to 10 players per side. Using a bouncy soft touch volleyball, players can only use their hands either through tapping or bouncing to try and score in a soccer goal. The goalie can use their hands to grab the ball and then must tap it to a teammate to continue play. Players can dribble like a basketball or tap in the air as they move down the court but when they dispose of the ball, they must tap it.

A free pass is given to the opposition where they throw the ball up and hit it if (1) a player deliberately uses their feet to kick or stop the ball (except the goal who can stop the ball with their feet). (2) A player has more than 5 touches of the ball without it hitting another player or the side wall (if an indoor court). (3) A player commits a foul by making deliberate contact with an opposing player such as bumping them, hitting them, pushing them, etc. The player who committed the violation has to stand next to the opposing player who is taking the free pass and they are given 5 metres from another opposing player.

Players can go anywhere, including the goalie, except the goalie can only grab the ball inside the netball semi circle. Once the goalie has the ball in the hands, the opposition team must move out of the semi circle.

If playing indoors with a wall or net, there are no outs. If playing outside, when the ball goes out of court, the opposition take a free pass to tap it back into play.

1 point is scored for every goal. When a goal is scored, teams start back in their own defensive half and the team that didn't score gets to start with the ball in the middle of the court by throwing it up and taking it back to a teammate.
