Tackball - a New Sport
The new sport of Tackball was submitted by George from Panama in January 2024. Tackball blends football throws, rugby runs, and soccer dribbling on a 100-meter field with unique endboxes for exciting 3-point scores.
Equipment Required: Boots, protective gear, sports clothing for players. Playing field, goalposts, endboxes, referee, round ball, timer, scoreboard for the game.
Sport Details
Scoring:
Tackball scoring is based on two methods:
- Goalpost: Placing the ball into the vertical structure behind the opposing team's endbox, similar to American football, awards 1 point.
- Endbox: Physically carrying the ball into the rectangular area behind the opposing team's goal line, similar to rugby, awards 3 points.
Number of Players:
Each team has 11 players on the field, with the ability to make unlimited substitutions during the game.
Fouls:
Tackball aims to be a clean and respectful sport. The following actions are considered fouls:
- Unsportsmanlike conduct, such as arguing with the referee or insulting opposing players.
- Hitting the head, back, or sensitive areas of the body.
- Charging a player who does not have the ball.
- Improper ball movement, such as not bouncing it with the hands or not keeping it on the ground with the legs.
Penalties:
You can get kicked out of the game if you commit unsportmanlike conduct or if you commit 3 or more fouls.
Game Periods:
A Tackball game is divided into three halves of 20 minutes each, with a 10-minute break between them.
Mobility:
Players can use any part of their body to move the ball, but with certain restrictions:
- Hands: The ball must be bounced constantly, except when making a pass or a shot.
- Legs: The ball must be kept on the ground until making a pass, a shot, or a run.
Tiebreaker:
In the event of a tie at the end of the game, a unique tiebreaker system is used:
- Ball throw: From the endbox, one player from each team throws the ball with their legs to the center of the field. The team that catches the ball wins the game.
Positions:
In Tackball, each player has a specific role on the field:
- 4 central guards: Defend the endbox and the goalpost from the opposing team.
- 2 defensive runners: Move along the sidelines to defend, recover the ball, and create attacks.
- 2 playmakers: Regain possession of the ball and generate scoring opportunities.
- 2 offensive runners: Attack along the sidelines and assist the attacker.
- 1 attacker: Their main objective is to score points and contribute in it.
Examples of Plays:
- A player can use their feet to control the ball down the sideline and then make a pass with their hands to the attacker.
- A player can use their head to deflect a shot from the opposing team and prevent a point.
- A player can use their body to shield the ball from an opponent and prevent them from taking possession.
Playing Surface:
The Tackball field has dimensions similar to a soccer field:
- Length: 100 meters (109.3 yards)
- Width: 55 or 60 meters (60.4 or 65.6 yards)
At each end of the field are two special areas:
- Endbox: Rectangular zones 5 meters (16.4 feet) long and 20 meters (65.6 feet) wide. In the last 10 minutes of each half (5 minutes in the last half), players must reach this zone with the ball to score points.
- Goalposts: Two vertical structures 12 meters (39.4 feet) long and 5.5 meters (18 feet) wide located behind each endbox.
Ball:
The ball used in Tackball is similar in size to a bowling ball or a soccer ball, with a circumference of 66 to 68 centimeters (26 to 26.8 inches).
