Racketball - a New Sport
The new sport of Racketball was created by Arthur Lonsdale from Lancashire, England in January 2024. Racketball is a paddle team sport with a net, that is a bit like table tennis, hockey, and handball. This sport probably needs a new name, as there is the similarly named squash-type sport called Racquetball.
Racketball is a paddle team sport in where the aim of the game is to get the ball into the other team's net. There are 4 players on each team, with up to two substitutes being able to be made throughout the game. There is a goalkeeper (gk) in net, a blocker (bk) behind the opponent's net, and a primary and secondary (pr and sr respectively) in the outfield. Pitches can be from 16 to 18.5m in length and 9 - 10m in width.
Kick-off is like in football, with the team starting with the ball being decided by a coin toss. The away team gets to call on the coin toss. During kick-off, The primary player gets to start with the ball and can pass to the secondary or the goalkeeper, but not the blocker.
If a pass is played to the blocker, the kick-off is turned over to the other team. If the ball is dropped at any point or harmful physical contact has occurred, a "free hand" is given to the opposing team at the place of rule breaking. During a free hand, you can pass to anyone or shoot.
If the ball goes out of play, a "hit in" is awarded, where the opposing team can pass to anyone and shoot directly.
The blocker is limited to a small rectangular box behind the opponents net, and can keep any missed shots, passes or saved shots alive and still in play.
If the ball goes behind Team A's net and Team A have hit it out, the blocker starts with the ball and can pass to anyone, and the gk starts with the ball if:
The ball has gone behind team A's net and team B have hit it out,
or
The blocker moves outside of their box.
Games are usually 2x 20 minute halves with a ten minute break in between.
You get one point for scoring.
Equipment Required:
The ball is similar to a table tennis ball.
Most player's rackets are like table tennis rackets.
A goalkeeper's racket is a small scale cricket bat that is slender and long.
Goals are wide but with a low crossbar.
