PivotBall - a New Sport
The new sport of PivotBall was created by Ian Brogan from the USA in 2024. PivotBall combines aspects of basketball, handball, and ultimate frisbee.
PivotBall is a dynamic and strategic sport that combines elements of handball, basketball, and ultimate frisbee, offering players a unique and exciting playing experience with vertically facing hoops and a rubber ball.
Gameplay Rules:
- Ball Possession: The player with the ball cannot move but can pivot on one foot without lifting it. Defense can intercept or block passes and shots but cannot steal the ball directly out of someone's hands.
- Physical Contact: No pushing or holding is allowed, though players can touch each other. Any pushing or grabbing results in the opposing team receiving a penalty shot and a personal foul. After three personal fouls, the player is ejected from the game.
- Possession Change: If there's an incomplete pass or missed shot, the opposing team gains possession.
- Court Division: One team has possession on one side of the court, and defense is not allowed on the other half of the court where the offense doesn't have possession.
- Pivot Foot Rule: If a player with the ball lifts their pivoting foot, the other team gains possession.
- Penalty Shots: Various actions, such as being on the wrong end of the court, being in the restricted area, or attempting to steal the ball directly from someone's hands, result in the opposing team getting a penalty shot. Penalty shots are taken from a dash mark 20 feet parallel to the goal and are uncontested.
- Points: A normal score is 2 points and penalty shot is 1 point.
Equipment Required:
- Court Dimensions: The court is 80 feet long, with a half court line at the 40-foot mark. Goals are positioned at each end of the court.
- Goal Height: The goals are set at 7.5 feet off the ground.
- Restricted Area: A 10-foot square surrounding each goal, extending 10 feet on each side, serves as the restricted area.
- Hoop and Ball: The hoop is 12 inches in diameter, and the ball used in the game is 3 inches in diameter. The hoop is vertical facing and has a closed net attached to catch the ball.
For makeshift pickup games you could use hoops with nets such as fishing or butterfly nets and mount them to a pole. You could use cones to mark the different areas of the playing area. For the ball any palm sized ball that's not to hard should do.
