Cross Sprint - a New Sport

The new sport of Cross Sprint was created by Øystein Pedersen from Norway in 2023. Cross Sprint involves sprinting 50 - 350 meters over various terrain.

Cross Sprints are simply 30 to 400 meters sprints run on a soft terrain surface, with dirt, grass, mud, or even snow. Also there should be no dangerous rocks etc on the track. The elevation should vary, with some more hillier sections of each competition. The competitions consist of two or more stages, and the runners should face some different terrain throughout the stages.

Equipment Required: Running shoes and two phones with time-tracking app. Starting blocks can be used, but not necessary.

Sport Details

There are two distances:

On stages with run-up (see below), the run-up length until 30 meters is added to the stage distance when doing the calculations above.

The format of Cross Sprint varies from competition to competition.

Here is a simple format:

2 stages

  1. First a time-trial with flying start. There is a 30 meter run-up before the starting line. Can be run on trails, but not too technical.
  2. Chase race, where the runners start in different positions based on the result from the time-trial. This could be the number of seconds on the time-trial multiplied by 10. If one ran 8.38 in the time-trial, that would mean he will run 83.8 meters in the chase race etc. If the runners start in separate lanes, block starts can be used, otherwise use a 3-point start. It's also possible to simplify, with fixed starting positions, like in Formula 1. Over distances, runners should run in separate lanes the whole race. The lanes should have as equal difficulty as possible. The best runner from the time-trial chooses their lane first, then the 2nd place, etc. On long distance races, there are no separate lanes, except on the first 20 - 30 meters if block starts are used.
