Cycling Tips for Children

Here are our ten tips for children starting out on their bike. The first tip and the most important is to wear a helmet at all times.

  1. Wear a helmet - make sure that it is approved by the appropriate standard authority. Also check that it fits correctly and it is secured securely to the head.
  2. Choose the right bike: Make sure your child's bike is the right size and fit for their age and height. They should be able to reach the pedals and handlebars comfortably.
  3. Roadworthy bike - make sure your bike is in a roadworthy condition and set up correctly for you. Also check that it is the correct bicycle for the type of riding that you expect to be doing.
  4. Start slowly: Begin with flat, smooth surfaces without any obstacles or traffic, such as a parking lot or quiet street.
  5. Learn balance: Encourage your child to learn balance by gliding with their feet off the pedals and gradually lifting their feet as they gain confidence.
  6. Teach basic skills: Teach your child how to use the brakes, shift gears (if applicable), and look over their shoulder before turning or changing lanes.
  7. Watch the road - if you are doing riding on roads, try to stick to low traffic roads or roads with a cycle lane, and be aware of and follow the road rules.
  8. Be visible: Make sure your child wears bright or reflective clothing and has reflectors on their bike to increase visibility to others.
  9. Stay alert: Remind your child to stay aware of their surroundings, including other cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles.
  10. Practice makes perfect: Encourage your child to practice regularly to build confidence and improve their skills.
