1917 Copa América in Uruguay
The 1917 Copa América was held in Uruguay. It was the 2nd edition of the tournament. The tournament featured the following four teams:
- Uruguay
- Argentina
- Brazil
- Chile
Uruguay finished on top after the round-robin format, clinching the championship. Uruguay won the tournament for the second consecutive time, having also claimed the title in the inaugural 1916 Copa America.
Trivia
- At the time the tournament was named the South American Championship. It was not called the Copa América until after 1967.
- The winners Uruguay didn’t concede a single goal throughout the entire tournament. They were the first host country to win.
- The 1919 tournament was the first to award the Copa América trophy, known as the “Copa del Campeonato Sudamericano de Football.” The trophy was presented to the winning team, Uruguay, and has since become one of the most prestigious awards in South American football.
