Australian Cycling at the Olympics
Cycling is a sport where Australia has excelled at the Olympic Games. The country has a strong tradition in track cycling, with athletes like Anna Meares, who won gold in the women's sprint at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics, becoming household names.
Trivia
- Donna Kite represented Australia in two different sports at the Olympic Games: Athletics in 1984 and Road Cycling in 1988.
- In 2008 in Beijing, BMX was added to the Olympic cycling program. Representing Australia was a rider called Kamakazi, a Queensland BMX champion who changed his name from Jamie Hildebrandt by deed poll.
- Cyclist Dunc Gray won Australia’s first Olympic cycling medal (a bronze) in 1928, and Australia’s first Olympic gold medal for cycling in 1932. He represented Australia at three Olympic Games – 1928, 1932 and 1936.
