Australia continued its trend of strong performances, securing 46 medals, including 14 golds. The nation excelled in swimming, with Stephanie Rice winning three gold medals, and in cycling, with Anna Meares adding to her impressive medal tally.

- Four sets of siblings competed for Australia in Beijing - three playing in the water polo competition and one in the hockey team.
- Phillip Dutton, who won equestrian gold for Australia in 1996 and 2000, was part of the USA team in Beijing.
- Six married couples competed for Australia in Beijing while Claire Woods and Jared Tallent were married six days after the Games.
- The rowing team in Beijing had the most number of competitors for Australia with 48 athletes, ahead of swimming (43) and athletics (41).
