Vertical Jump Sportshall Event
The Vertical Jump athletics event is part of the Sportshall series designed for the indoor use of school age competitors. This is a brief outline of the event, for more details see official literature.
Equipment Required
- Talcum powder, vertical jump scale attached to the wall.
General Procedure
- The athlete stands with their back to the wall, with the head and heels touching. Both arms are stretched upwards to push the sliding scale up with their fingertips. Elbows and fingers
must be straight and arms should touch the side of the head, while the feet remain flat on the floor. - The athlete’s starting height is recorded, and the scale can be reset to this level for subsequent trials.
- The athlete dips their fingertips in talcum powder and stands sideways to the wall, with the nominated jumping arm closest to the wall.
- They then jump from a standing position and touch the scale at the highest possible point.
- An athlete can bend their knees and swing their arms in preparation for the jump, but their feet must not leave the ground until they jump.
- Measurement should be taken to the nearest cm below the highest point of the chalk mark.
