2001 Tour de France
The 2001 Tour de France, the 88th edition of the iconic race, comprised 20 stages and a prologue, covering a total distance of approximately 3,462 kilometers (2,151 miles). The race began in Dunkirk with a prologue time trial and concluded in Paris.
American cyclist Lance Armstrong claimed his third consecutive Tour de France victory in 2001. Armstrong seized the yellow jersey after a dominating performance in the 10th stage, a mountain stage to L'Alpe d'Huez, where he made a decisive solo attack. Armstrong finished the race with a substantial lead of over 6 minutes ahead of German cyclist Jan Ullrich, who finished second, while Spanish rider Joseba Beloki secured third place on the podium.
Trivia
- The original winner of this tour was US rider Lance Armstrong, however after being found guilty of doping by the USADA in 2012, he was stripped of this and all the other titles.
- On the climb to L'Alpe d'Huez, Armstrong famously feigned weakness before launching a powerful attack that left his rivals behind. This move became known as "The Look" and was a defining moment of the race.
