Josef Musil : Volleyball
Josef Musil (born 3 July 1932) is a former Czech volleyball player. He was born in a small village named Kosteni Lhota. Musil was 19 when he joined the Czechoslovakian Nation Team.
Greatest Sporting Achievements
Musil helped win Czech two Olympic medals in 1964 and 1968, five World Championship medals and three European Championship medals between 1952 and 1967. He also won seven Czech championships and one Italian title. He was dubbed “Merited Master of Sport”, which is the highest honor bestowed upon athletes during that period by former Czech authorities. The FIVB named Josef Musil also named him one of the eight best volleyball players of the century.
Why Was He So Good?
Josef Musil was acknowledged as a soft setter on and off the court. His shy character didn’t mislead his teammates. They knew that he would direct them to victory. Musil didn’t need to show off his larger-than-life emotions to win. His chivalry and whole kindness got him everywhere he wanted to be.
What You May Not Know
- He and his family moved to Prague in 1946 and that was when his talents on the sport was first noticed.
- Josef Musil was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2004.
